World number 69 Marcos Giron conceded just two games to Emilio Gomez on Tuesday to get a promising Houston Open campaign underway. The 29-year-old reached his first ATP tour final at the San Diego Open last summer before defeat to Brandon Nakashima and he reached back-to-back quarter-finals on US soil back in February to look a tough draw here in Houston. World number 138 Tomas Mahac is no doubt a player with potential far higher than his current ranking suggests but the Czech is probably at his best on a hardcourt. The 22-year-old is yet to drop a set this week from qualifying through to a mini upset over Jack Sock on Wednesday but back Giron to win through outright here, probably in two.
