World number 10 Barbora Krejcikova set a career-high of second after a stunning run to the 2021 Roland-Garros title, only her second ever as a singles player at the time, and she added a first Masters trophy to her now career total of seven titles in Dubai last spring. The 28-year-old has struggled to stay consistently fit, and with that consistently strong, on tour but she put in a great shift to win the San Diego 500 late last season and she is well capable of going on a deep run this fortnight. World number 122 Mai Hontama enjoyed an excellent end to last season on the Asian swing, reaching the semi-finals in Osaka and looking competitive in defeat to Iga Swiatek in Tokyo, but this should be far too steep of a challenge on her Melbourne debut. Back Krejcikova, who will be eager to make a statement as the often overlooked member of the top 10, to win in straight sets.
