THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Rebeka Masarova came into the Guangzhou Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 64th after claiming a first top 10 win over Maria Sakkari at the US Open last month. The Spaniard failed to capitalise on that with second round defeat but she looks a dark horse for a maiden WTA title here after putting out two wily foes in Kateryna Baindl and Viktorija Golubic. World number 27 Magda Linette is the top seed in Guangzhou, with a ranking built mostly on her remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, but she survived an early scare with a comeback over Jodie Burrage in the first round. A straight-sets victory over Daria Saville on Wednesday was her second bagel of the tournament to suggest she is finding her feet back on hardcourts but this will be her toughest match yet. Back Linette to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
