THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Luca Nardi will break inside the top 70 for the first time after beating Daniel Altmaier in straight sets on Thursday, an excellent result on clay. The Italian made headlines worldwide after shocking Novak Djokovic in three sets at Indian Wells back in March but he has struggled to make much of a dent on tour since despite winning the Napoli Challenger, on clay, later that month.
This looks to be a fascinating first encounter with last season’s runner-up Holger Rune, who will have to play his usual role as villain of the piece in one of the most raucous partisan atmospheres in tennis here in Rome. The Dane has struggled to find any sort of consistent form practically since the start of the late hardcourt swing last summer and Nardi, as well as the baying home fans, will be all too aware of his recent shortcomings. Rune would come through in straight sets at their respective best levels but take Nardi to earn at least a set to leave the victor of a likely thriller on Centre Court, late on Saturday night, up to chance.
