THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating, totally unpredictable first encounter between world number 14 Liudmila Samsonova, who has lost all four of her matches (singles and doubles) so far in 2024, and former number 21 Amanda Anisimova in the early stages of her return to the tour. 22-year-old Anisimova took an extended break from the WTA tour last April after struggling with off-court and coaching issues but she came back with a bang on the 1st of January, beating former number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets. The American has twice reached the round of 16 in Melbourne, including on her debut in 2019, but her best run was an incredible semi-final exit at Roland-Garros later that year.
25-year-old Samsonova is one of the streakier players on tour but at her best last year she beat Elena Rybakina, twice in quick succession, en-route to two gut-wrenching runners-up finishes at the Canada and Beijing Masters. The Russian’s last tour-level win came in late October but she remains the slightest favourite on overall recent form against a serious dark horse in Anisimova.
