THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Linda Noskova passed a very significant test on Monday by beating qualifier Bernarda Pera in straight sets, snapping a two-match losing streak in the bud since her incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The Czech set a career-high WTA world ranking of 28th for her efforts in Melbourne, where she stunned top seed Iga Swiatek from a set down to blow the draw wide open, but a first round defeat in Abu Dhabi last week was a concern that she has so far put to rest. World number nine Maria Sakkari is one of the more intermittent performers on tour, with last year’s victory at the Guadalajara Masters turning out not to be the corner we had expected. The 28-year-old brings a two-match losing streak into Doha from two winnable fixtures against Elina Avanesyan in Melbourne and Sorana Cirstea last week in Abu Dhabi but it would be unwise to expect an upset here.

Sakkari can frustrate both herself and fans on court but she more often than not turns up at big events until the latter stages. Noskova’s no-nonsense tennis could as easily dismantle her opponent’s game as be overpowered in this first encounter so back the Czech to earn at least a set, on momentum, to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: LINDA NOSKOVA TO WIN A SET
