Jelena Ostapenko produced a much-needed convincing performance in the opening round of the Korea Open, beating Anastasia Zakharova 6-4 6-1. The top seed had arrived in Seoul following three successive defeats, including a three set loss in the opening round of the US Open to Tatjana Maria, but quickly returned to winning ways at this tournament. It has been an inconsistent season for Ostapenko, though she did advance to the semi-finals of the Qatar Open in February.

Taylah Preston had to work considerably harder in round one, beating Himeno Sakatsume in three sets. The 20-year-old Australian responded impressively after dropping the middle set to win 6-2 3-6 6-2 and is now at a career high of 94 in the world. Preston also showed encouraging signs at the US Open, recording her first Grand Slam main draw victory with a win over Alycia Parks.

Ostapenko possesses considerably greater experience and firepower, and she will take plenty of confidence from ending her run of losses in the first-round.
