THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Lin Zhu was handed the controversial wildcard at the WTA Elite Trophy but she has earned her place in the semi-finals after beating Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Tuesday and taking a set from Liudmila Samsonova in defeat on Thursday. The 29-year-old won her first WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships back in February and she reached a second final at the Osaka Open last month, finishing runner-up to Ashlyn Krueger, but this is her best run of an excellent season. This will be a totally different test after playing the home underdog all week in Zhuhai as she takes on Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng, who beat Donna Vekic and Jelena Ostapenko in three sets apiece this week. The 21-year-old brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 18th into the tournament after recently winning the Zhengzhou 500 and took the likes of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina to oust her from her previous three campaigns. Back the younger Chinese to come through a likely three-setter to reach the final.
