THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Thursday between two young players on their way back up the WTA rankings towards former glories. Former number four Sofia Kenin has moved back up to 40th in the live rankings after stunning Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets on Wednesday as she continues to enjoy the form that saw her finish runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova at the San Diego Open last week. That first final since 2020 could have gone one of two ways for the American but it looks to have hugely benefitted her confidence on court and that is what has been missing, mainly, from her past two seasons in the wilderness. Former number 13 Leylah Fernandez has endured a similar, if shorter, story since her incredible run to the US Open final in 2021 and she too is through to the quarter-finals without dropping a set after ousting in-form Emma Navarro.
Kenin beat Fernandez in New York at the peak of her powers three years ago but the Canadian has vastly improved since then and this match looks likely to need a decider. Just three points separated Kenin from Krejcikova in last week’s San Diego final and that sort of form makes her the light favourite here, although backing the American to earn at least a set is the wise move between two of the most intense players on tour.
