THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Leylah Fernandez set a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th after her famous, incredible run to the US Open final in 2021 in which she finished runner-up to fellow young star Emma Raducanu. The Canadian has endured a tough few seasons since, with injury scuppering a tentative fight back in 2022, but she ended last season in some serious form to look ready for a new assault on the top 20. Fernandez reached the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Masters before claiming a third WTA title at the Hong Kong Open, beating Katerina Siniakova before the Czech returned the favour a week later in the Jiangxi Open semis. However, her greatest achievement to date may be her most recent as she practically single-handedly led Canada to their first ever Billie Jean King Cup title – beating the likes of Jasmine Paolini and Marketa Vondrosuova in singles as well as top Czech pair Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova in doubles.
THE LOWDOWN
17-year-old Sara Bejlek qualified for her second Australian Open appearance without dropping a set this week but she has been handed an unfortunate draw against one of the more dangerous unseeded players. The Czech certainly stands a chance at forcing a decider against Fernandez, who can often need a spot of jeopardy before finding her best, and her qualifying run deserves caution.
