The American fell in three sets to Otto Virtanen as part of a lacklustre USA side who missed out on the Davis Cup Finals last week but recent wins over Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime are proof of the level he is searching for. World number 186 Kimmer Coppejans beat Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets to get a decent foothold in at Zhuhai and it would not be a huge surprise to see the Belgian ride that momentum to take at least a set here.
