World number 11 Danielle Collins finished runner-up to Ash Barty here last season in her first Grand Slam final, beating Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals to do so. The 29-year-old also reached the semi-finals here on her debut in 2019 in a run that totally changed the course of her career and she claimed her first two WTA titles back-to-back in 2021. The American navigated past Anna Kalinskaya in a tough three-set opener on Monday but it does not get any easier in this first meeting with former world number 19 Karolina Muchova, who conceded just three games to Lesia Tsurenko in her opener. Current world number 133 Muchova is on the long road back from an injury lay-off but at her best she was the last player to beat Ash Barty in Melbourne, upsetting the Aussie favourite here in 2021 before a semi-final exit to Jennifer Brady. Three sets seem likelier than two here but back Collins to win at least one of them in what could end up a thriller on Wednesday.
