World number 14 Grigor Dimitrov looks the reasonable favourite to lift a first ATP title since 2017 after Jordan Thompson’s heroic efforts ousted Rafael Nadal in three gruelling sets on Friday. World number 55 Thompson ended 2023 in strong form to look a creditable threat to Nada’s comeback in Brisbane but the Aussie rode his luck a little in the third, after saving three match points, as Nadal started to struggle after the three-hour mark. The Brisbane crowd will back Thompson to the hilt in this exciting clash but the 29-year-old will have to recover well to have any chance against in-form Dimitrov, who has coasted through his last two rounds after a comeback over Andy Murray in the first. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but Dimitrov is in a real purple patch right now. Back the Bulgarian to edge out the home hero, probably in very tight straight sets.
