Former world number one Daniil Medvedev has finished runner-up in each of the last two Australian Open finals, first to Novak Djokovic in 2021 before last year’s modern classic where Rafael Nadal came back from two sets down to make history. 26-year-old Medvedev claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open later in 2021, beating Djokovic in a masterclass, but it does feel like it took the Russian the rest of last season to exorcise his loss here. The seventh seed’s looked ready for another title challenge on Monday, though, conceding just three games to an unfortunate Marcos Giron – who did not play badly at all.
THE PREDICTION
33-year-old John Millman thrilled home fans on Monday with an incredible five-set victory over in-form Marc-Andrea Huesler to fully justify his wildcard into the main draw. The current world number 140 endured a tough 2022 to drop out of the top 100 but hopefully the experience on Court 3 will boost a comeback in 2023. The Aussie has drawn one of the shortest straws here but he will savour the opportunity to play the underdog in this first meeting with Medvedev on one of the main courts on Wednesday. Medvedev should be way too good, ultimately, but his choppy relationship with the Melbourne crowd could make this interesting if Millman enjoys a strong spell. Back Medvedev to win in straight sets all the same.
