THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula takes on former number two Paula Badosa for the second time on tour but it may as well be the first given Badosa had to retire early from their quarter-final at the Miami Open last season. Current world number 33 Badosa beat Diana Shnaider with room to spare on Thursday to string three victories together for only the second time this season and she looks to be enjoying a return to her favoured clay after struggling to find her best tennis for much of the past year. However, top seed Pegula feels like she is home away from home here in Charleston and she looked in good shape on Thursday when beating a tough foe on clay in Irina-Camelia Begu in three sets. Home advantage should favour the American here but Badosa is no doubt the better player on clay when fit and firing. Back Pegula to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance or risk the three set option here.
