THE PREDICTION
World number five Jessica Pegula suffered a shock second round exit to Clara Burel at the Australian Open in January to force her back to the drawing board but her return to the tour last week in San Diego was not convincing. The 30-year-old won her maiden Masters title in Montreal last summer to prove her ability at this level but she has looked far from her best since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the WTA Finals late last season, causing her to split with long-term coach David Witt. A last 16 victory over Anna Blinkova last week in San Diego extended her record to 3-0 over the Russian but the pair have met three times in the space of 12 months, with each of the last two seeing sets go both ways. 25-year-old Blinkova stunned a resurgent Karolina Pliskova in three sets on Thursday to build on some promising form this season but back Pegula, with a point to prove, to edge this outright.
