World number 30 Dan Evans beat Facundo Bagnis in a relatively straightforward four-set opener on Tuesday. The 32-year-old enjoyed his best run at a Grand Slam here back in 2018, upsetting Marin Cilic en-route to the round of 16 before Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got the better of him and there is no question that the Brit’s main goals on tour these days are deeper runs at the majors. 35-year-old Jeremy Chardy came into Melbourne on a protected ranking after missing more than a year from tour recovering form injury and he will be ecstatic with his return on Tuesday, coming back from a set down to Daniel Elahi Galan. The Frenchman enjoyed a renaissance year in 2021 before injury halted his progress but in that time he faced Dan Evans three times, losing to the Brit on all three occasions. Evans leads their head-to-head 3-1 and with Chardy still on the comeback trail this should fall in three sets for the Brit. Lapses in concentration often befall the Brit, though, so taking Evans to win outright is the right call for an accumulator.
