World number three Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals last November for one of four high-profile defeats in finals that dominated his 2022. The 24-year-old truly became a top 10 player in a transformative season but losses to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Masters and US Open alongside a one-sided defeat to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros suggest he has more work to do on the mentality side of his game. A poor start to 2023 saw Ruud lose to Laslo Djere in Auckland last week but he played himself into better form on Tuesday with a commendable four-set win over Tomas Mahac.

World number 39 Jenson Brooksby came back from a set down to Christopher O’Connell on Tuesday to continue some encouraging form from a run to the Auckland Classic last week. The 22-year-old ended last season with a four-match losing streak but some work in the off-season should see him targeting breaking the top 30 on tour this season as well as a first ATP title. Brooksby is often at his best at Grand Slams and against the better players on tour. Ruud beat the American in straight sets at the Italian Open on clay last season but four sets seem likelier than three here, if five considering Ruud’s slow start to 2023. Back the Norwegian to win outright.
