THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka is yet to drop a set this week in Brisbane after two solid results over young players Anna Kalinskaya and Clara Burel, both of whom were still at primary school when she won her first of two Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013. The 34-year-old is a tough player to back with full confidence these days, capable of wildly different performances match-on-match, but she has a clear affinity with the people and conditions in this part of the world and she should be considered an outside title contender alongside her opponent here. World number 12 Jelena Ostapenko overcame a possibly resurgent Karolina Pliskova in three sets on Thursday to back up a consummate opener over Camila Giorgi and those results are certainly the tough of the pair’s respective campaigns so far.
Azarenka leads their head-to-head 2-0 after most recently beating the Latvian from a set down to reach the Indian Wells final in 2021 but Ostapenko has improved, arguably, since then. Both of their matches have come close so take Azarenka to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
