THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova came back from a set down to beat the returning Naomi Osaka, also a former number one, in a tight three-set tussle on Wednesday. The current world number 39 has struggled to find her imperious best tennis on tour for well over a year now but she can occasionally burst into life at the more prestigious events, with a run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open this time last year coming out of the blue. World number 12 Jelena Ostapenko is another top player battling to find her best level on tour with a very high, if sporadic, ceiling. The 26-year-old beat the likes of Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula late last season amidst some avoidable defeats but she can include a victory over Pliskova in that span, beating the Czech in three sets last August.

The pair share a storied 5-5 head-to-head record but Ostapenko has won four of their last five encounters, including each of their last two, to look the favourite here. Six of their 10 matches have seen sets go both ways, though, so the suitably cautious move this early in the season is taking Ostapenko to earn at least one of them as the likelier of two very capable victors.

TIP: JELENA OSTAPENKO TO WIN A SET
