THE PREDICTION

World number 41 Jan-Lennard Struff fell back outside the top 30 for the first time in a year since his remarkable run to the Madrid Masters final this time last season, where he lost in three tight sets to Carlos Alcaraz, but he will not mind one bit after finally winning his maiden ATP title at the Munich Open at the ripe age of 34 years old. The German took Alcaraz to three sets again last time out, losing to the Spaniard in even tighter circumstances in the round of 16, but he should be able to bounce back with gusto here in Rome as one of the more physical threats on clay around.

World number 99 Pedro Cachin snapped a 14-match losing streak in Madrid two weeks ago, blowing off the cobwebs just in time to be very competitive in a three-set thriller against his idol Rafael Nadal, and it remains to be seen how he fares after a much-needed confidence boost. The Argentine also won his maiden ATP title on clay last summer at the Gstaad Open, similarly as a late bloomer at 29 years old, but Struff beat him in three sets in Madrid last season to look the reasonable favourite here. Back Struff to win what looks set to be a lengthy scrap.

TIP: JAN-LENNARD STRUFF TO WIN
