Qinwen Zheng produced another remarkable comeback in the round-of-16 as she defeated Iga Swiatek to reach her third consecutive US Open quarter-final. Zheng appeared in serious trouble when she fell 5-0 behind after just 23 minutes but incredibly reeled off seven consecutive games to claim the opening set. She then broke in the middle of the second and went on to win 7-5 6-3. It was her first top 10 victory since May 2025 and continued an extraordinary run from qualifying following her return from elbow surgery. Zheng had previously saved a match point and recovered from 5-0 down in the deciding set to beat Madison Keys in round three.
Elena Rybakina delivered her most convincing performance of the tournament in the previous stage as she easily got past four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 6-1 6-4. The second seed dominated, winning 27 of 31 points behind her first serve and striking 27 winners. She is now just one match away from becoming world number one for the first time.
Rybakina leads the head-to-head 4-1, although both of their meetings in Doha and Madrid this season have gone to three sets. The Kazakh will be incredibly motivated to secure the number one ranking with a win here.
