THE PREDICTION
World number four Casper Ruud started 2023 off in woeful form but the Norwegian improved en-route to the Estoril Open title last week and he made it five wins on the spin on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over Botic van de Zandschulp – the last player to beat him in Miami last month. 24-year-old Ruud has a reasonable chance at winning this Masters event over the next few seasons but he will need to improve his record at this level, with last season’s runners-up place to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open by far his best campaign at a 1000 event. This is an intriguing round of 16 clash with world number 100 Jan-Lennard Struff, who proved once again that his current ranking is an anomaly with an excellent performance to oust Alex de Minaur in straight sets. The 32-year-old has beaten some tough players this week in qualifying through to the last 16 and he leads Ruud 2-0 in their head-to-head, although the pair have not met since 2019 since when Ruud has exponentially improved.
The pair first met here back in 2017 when Struff claimed one of two straight-set wins over the Norwegian and so backing Ruud to edge this outright looks a suitably cautious concession here. In fact, consider taking Struff to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
