THE PREDICTION
World number 62 Jack Draper continued his excellent form in Adelaide with a consummate straight-sets victory over top seed Tommy Paul, whom he also beat in the round of 16 here exactly a year ago to the day. The 22-year-old came back from a set down to overcome Miomir Kecmanovic in a near four-hour three-set marathon on Wednesday, avenging his gut-wrenching defeat to the Serb at the Davis Cup Finals last November, and he can be doubly pleased both to have found the recovery to beat Paul as well as doing so in limited time. A more refreshed Draper will take on world number 31 Alexander Bublik after the Kazakh came through his own fierce three-set encounter with Lorenzo Musetti. The 26-year-old is almost certainly the most unpredictable player on tour but he is charismatic with it, with Adelaide crowds likely to get behind him in this neutral spectacle after he entertained them on Thursday.
Draper beat Bublik in straight sets at Queen’s back in 2021 but Bublik has matured a lot since, despite being the much older player, to look the slight favourite on this week’s form. Both possess piledriving serves and fearsome shots on both wings but Bublik’s extra sprinkling of madness makes backing him to earn at least a set feel the most sensible way to avoid a result.
