THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Alexander Zverev began last season afresh after a season-ending injury at Roland-Garros in 2022 and after a tricky few months on tour he burst into form in the summer, winning his 19th and 20th ATP titles in Hamburg and Chengdu. The 26-year-old moved back up to world number seven after an excellent end to the year, just missing out on the semi-finals at the ATP Finals despite beating Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev in the group stages. This will be a fascinating season for Zverev as he aims to return to the top of the sport and if this were an ordinary ATP clash with world number 46 Lorenzo Sonego he could be expected to win it, as he has in both of their previous encounters. However, 28-year-old Sonego can find a higher plain whilst playing for his country whilst Zverev has struggled on the international stage on a number of occasions.

Zverev is yet to drop a set to Sonego, most recently beating the Italian in two in Dubai last year, but backing the Italian to snatch his first here could be the shrewd way to avoid a result. Zverev can occasionally take some warming up on tour.

TIP: LORENZO SONEGO TO WIN A SET
