THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber makes her long-awaited return to the WTA tour after becoming a mother for the first time. The German will turn 36 next month but she is likely feeling inspired by the likes of Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki, both of whom made impressive returns to the sport last season, rather than fearful of the coming twilight of her illustrious career. World number 30 Jasmine Paolini offers a tough opening challenge to Kerber’s uber-defence, with two WTA finals reached last season as well as excellent runs at the Cincinnati Open and across the Chinese swing. The 27-year-old should have enough to oust her veteran opposition, with Kerber’s last competitive match coming at Wimbledon in 2022, but underestimate a three-time Grand Slam champion at your peril. The shrewd move could be backing Kerber to win the first set before falling away, although taking her to take at least one overall is the safest option.
TIP: ANGELIQUE KERBER TO WIN THE FIRST SET
