The 27-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she has struggled to find any sort of consistency in 2023, with her run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros her best of the year. World number 176 Iryna Shymanovich beat Laura Pigossi in straight sets on Monday to get a decent foothold in at Monastir but Mertens should be too steep of a challenge in this first encounter. The Belgian beat Alex Eala in comfortable straight sets on Tuesday and it should take a top seed to knock her out of the draw. Back Mertens to win in straight sets.
