THE PREDICTION

Former world number 22 Irina-Camelia Begu is at her best on clay and she has impressed since making her return to tour from a season-ending injury at the US Open last summer. The 33-year-old came back from a set down to beat Rebeka Masarova on Wednesday but a well-fought defeat in straight sets to Madison Keys at this stage of the Madrid Open last time out suggests she will struggle against the defending champion.

World number four Elena Rybakina claimed eight wins on the spin to lift the Stuttgart Open title this time last month, going on to reach the semi-finals in Madrid before a tight, thrilling three-set defeat to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. The 24-year-old has claimed three titles already this season, adding Stuttgart to hardcourt trophies in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, and she would likely have made it four had she not met the unstoppable force of Danielle Collins in the Miami Open final. Begu has so far enjoyed a rare 100% record over Rybakina after beating her as a teenager back in 2017 but back the Kazakh to level things in straight sets here.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN 2-0
