THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Karen Khachanov moved back within four places of his career-high ATP world ranking of eighth this week after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open was finally thwarted by eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. The Russian got a promising Monte-Carlo Open campaign underway brilliantly on Tuesday with a commanding victory over last season’s runner-up Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and he looks the solid favourite to come through this second round clash with Ilya Ivashka. World number 74 Ivashka came back from a set down to beat Dan Evans to suggest he is ready for a battle on Wednesday but Khachanov is catching a lot of players out right now with some deceptively good form. Three sets are a distinct possibility here between two baseline lovers but Khachanov has played well enough in recent weeks to suggest two sets should do it here.
