HUGO GASTON VS FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO PREDICTION
World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo has needed top 20 opposition to oust him from his last three tournaments, Taylor Fritz in Madrid and Karen Khachanov twice in Monte-Carlo and Rome, to suggest he has addressed his poor start to 2024. The 25-year-old won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open in 2022 and he added a second in Eastbourne, on grass, last summer, after a career=best run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros.
A bye to the round of 16 would normally be welcome but this will be a thankless task for the Argentine against diminutive cult hero Hugo Gaston, whose entertaining game for clay appears to be powered by a direct connection to France under his feet. The world number 104 made his name with a huge run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in 2020 as a wildcard, losing to world number three Dominic Thiem in five sets, and he famously beat Carlos Alcaraz to reach the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters a year later.
Gaston beat Daniel Elahi Galan in straight sets on Monday to back-up an excellent qualifying campaign so far in Lyon, not far from his native Toulouse, and he will do his utmost to use the crowd’s energy to his advantage in this first meeting with Cerundolo. Taking the Argentine to win outright is the sensible call here, so consider a one-off on Gaston to snatch a set.
