World number 12 Hubert Hurkacz is an excellent player with a lot of weapons in his arsenal but he has so far looked uncomfortable on clay in his career. The 26-year-old took the first set against Bernabe Zapata Miralles before defeat at Estoril on Thursday to suggest he could fall early in Monte-Carlo but he did reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer before a four-set exit to Casper Ruud. World number 58 Laslo Djere is a clay-court aficionado through and through and the Serb will be confident in his ability to edge through this first meeting with Hurkacz in conditions that suit him. The 27-year-old did reasonably well on the South American clay swing back in February, where he took a set from Carlos Alcaraz before defeat in Buenos Aires, and backing him to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors looks the sensible option here.
