THE LOWDOWN
World number eight Holger Rune reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros for a second-successive season last summer and he emulated that run at Wimbledon before a consummate defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Dane made the round of 16 here last season before a five-set exit to Andrey Rublev and whilst he was in much better form 12 months ago he should still be considered a tough draw for anyone here – even Novak Djokovic. Rune came back from a set down to stun Djokovic at the 2022 Paris Masters to prove himself a clear future elite but the second half of 2023 took its toll on his body. Bringing in the likes of Boris Becker and Severin Luthi, Grand-Slam winning kingmakers who used to coach Djokovic and Roger Federer, respectively, is a bold statement that will be scrutinised match-by-match for the foreseeable future but the 20-year-old provably enjoys the pressure.
THE PREDICTION
World number 58 Yoshihito Nishioka could be a tricky tie for Rune as a talented, tricky left-hander with a penchant for dismantling big games. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Karen Khachanov at the Zhuhai Championships in late September but he has struggled to find that level since. Nishioka beat Rune from a set down in Adelaide at the start of last season but he was forced to pull out of the tournament this week, making this his first match since November. Back Rune to win outright, with four sets about as likely as three.
