THE PREDICTION
World number eight Holger Rune overcame a strong challenge by James Duckworth on Friday to claim his first straight-sets result of the week. The 20-year-old saw his chances at a first title since last April go up significantly as Rafael Nadal was shocked by Jordan Thompson in the later quarter-final but he still faces a tough task here against in-form Roman Safiullin, who overcame Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets to post a statement result. 26-year-old Safiullin will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 37th after starting 2024 as strongly as he ended 2023, particularly impressing against third seed Ben Shelton on Monday to back-up November’s shock result over Carlos Alcaraz in Paris. Rune remains the favourite in overall ability but Safiullin is quite arguably the player in better form for this first meeting with the Dane. Back the dark horse to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: ROMAN SAFIULLIN TO WIN A SET
