THE PREDICTION
Whilst admittedly a small sample size, this could prove to be the match of the year so far between two fearsome competitors in world number eight Maria Sakkari and former number one Angelique Kerber. 28-year-old Sakkari will be pumped after dragging Greece into the quarter-finals of the United Cup with an excellent straight-sets victory over Billie Jean King Cup champion Leylah Fernandez, backing up an easy win over Chile, but she has plenty of form for collapsing in the latter stages of tournaments. The pressure to perform may get to Sakkari, particularly if 35-year-old Kerber can continue improving on her comeback this week, but Kerber’s 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record should be ignored for the time being as the German returns from well over a year’s absence.
