THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating clash between former world number 32 Ajla Tomljanovic, who managed to play just three tour-level matches last season, and number 56 Katie Boulter just six places from her own career-high of 50th. 30-year-old Tomljanovic ended 2023 with an encouraging Challenger title picked up on clay in Brazil in November but her match fitness, particularly on a more body-demanding surface here in Perth, remains a concern for the next few weeks. 27-year-old Boulter won her first WTA title at the Nottingham Open last summer to suggest she has more to give on the WTA tour and she reached back-to-back third rounds at Wimbledon and the US Open on her stronger surfaces.
Tomljanovic is also strong on grass, on which she beat Boulter in Nottingham back in 2022 in their only previous encounter, but this match looks up for grabs. Take Tomljanovic to earn at least a set given her home advantage but consider leaving this match alone altogether whilst the Aussie finds her feet back on tour.
