World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo has struggled to find any sort of rhythm this season but he enjoyed his best run of the year in Madid, stunning both Tommy Paul and fourth seed Alexander Zverev before a tight three-set exit to Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals. 22-year-old Matteo Gigante will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 133rd after claiming his first ever tour-level win on Thursday, beating fellow wildcard Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets. The youngster will enjoy a full partisan home support on his return to Pietrangeli today but he looks to have just missed the boat against this much-improved Argentine.
