THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Matteo Berrettini put in an excellent performance on Monday to beat Maxime Cressy handily in straight sets. The former world number six is an excellent all courter without a hardcourt title to his name yet, with three of his seven career titles coming on clay and the rest on grass. Fitness and more recently form have both been fleeting for the Italian but Monday’s win was an encouraging, if tentative, sign of improvement and this first meeting with Francisco Cerundolo should be a thriller. World number 33 Cerundolo stunned Cam Norrie in straight sets on Monday to back-up an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open two weeks ago, where he upset Felix Auger-Aliassime before eventually falling foul of a resurgent Karen Khachanov. The 24-year-old claimed his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open last summer and he is probably the better-suited to the conditions here. Berrettini could be confidently backed to win in straight sets at his best but right now caution is wise where the Italian is involved. Consider taking this match to see three sets outside of an accumulator but otherwise back in-form Cerundolo to earn at least one.
