THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Caroline Garcia proved the pivotal player for France on Monday, coming back from a set down to beat old foe Angelique Kerber before partnering well with Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the doubles decider to edge the tie 12-10 in the deciding tiebreak. The 29-year-old started last season at a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth after a remarkable 2022 but she struggled to match her intensity in 2023, losing both of the finals she reached in singles but picking up an eighth doubles title in June. 27-year-old Jasmine Paolini came to Sydney at a career-high of 29th after enjoying an excellent second half to last season, in which she beat Garcia in each of their last two meetings in Zhengzhou and at the Billie Jean King Cup. The Italian beat Angelique Kerber in straight sets to claim Italy’s only win in their previous tie but this should be a much tougher test against Garcia, who will be eager to make amends for her international loss to Paolini back in November.

Each of their last two matches saw three tight sets, so backing Garcia to earn at least one is the suitably cautious pick here considering the tension of this must-win tie.

TIP: CAROLINE GARCIA TO WIN A SET
