THE PREDICTION

Whilst Felix Auger-Aliassime’s withdrawal from the Lyon Open this week was probably precautionary it would still be wise to leave this enticing match with Fabio Fognini out of an accumulator. World number 10 Auger-Aliassime has been struggling with his form all season long but he has claimed just one win on clay, against world number 240 Pablo Llamas Ruiz this week in Lyon, to suggest he could be an early top seed to topple in Paris. The Canadian took eventual champion Rafael Nadal to five sets in the round of 16 here last summer but he came close to a first round exit to Juan Pablo Varillas, having to come back from two sets down to squeak through on his weakest surface. Former world number nine Fabio Fognini has been dwindling on tour for a few seasons now but victories over Andy Murray and Miomir Kecmanovic in Rome were proof that he can still turn it on when the conditions are right.

The 35-year-old is a popular cult hero in Paris who will be backed early in the hope of making this an interesting contest but it is hard to see him coming through five sets. The longer the match takes the likelier Auger-Aliassime wins it but consider a one-off on Fognini to take the first set here or just at least a set.
