THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime moved back up to world number 20 this week after an unorthodox route to the Madrid Open final, where he took the first set before finishing runner-up to Andrey Rublev. The Canadian enjoyed two default wins after Jakub Mensik and Jiri Lehecka both pulled up injured but his biggest stroke of luck came when Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw from the tournament ahead of their quarter-final. A shock victory over top clay-courter Casper Ruud in between all of that was vastly impressive, though, and it will be fascinating to see what Auger-Aliassime can do this week in Rome on what has been considered, up to now, his weakest surface by far.
World number 112 Botic van de Zandschulp overcame fellow qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran in three tight sets on Thursday, including two tiebreaks, as he continues to labour for anything like his peak 2021 form on tour. The Dutchman stunned Auger-Aliassime in three tight sets at Indian Wells two years ago but the Canadian leads their head-to-head 2-1 after a comfortable win en-route to the Basel Indoors title late last year. Back Auger-Aliassime to win outright for caution’s sake here, with the conditions in Madrid vastly different to this more typical clay arena in Rome.
TIP: FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME TO WIN
