THE PREDICTION
World number 58 Fabian Marozsan did well to beat lucky loser Jurij Rodionov in comfortable straight sets, avoiding a common upset against players on a second wind. The 24-year-old burst onto the scene with a stunning upset over Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters last May but he bettered that run with a brilliant quarter-final exit at the Shanghai Masters in October, ousting Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud before a three-set exit to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz.
World number 24 Nicolas Jarry enjoyed a remarkable 2023 of his own with two titles picked up in his native Santiago and Geneva amidst a whole host of big results across surfaces. The 28-year-old can also boast upsetting Carlos Alcaraz after shocking the out-of-sorts Spaniard at the Argentina Open last month but he has struggled to find that same intensity since, losing the resultant final in Buenos Aires before disappointing exits in Rio and Santiago. A first meeting between these two could end up a proper thriller on Friday but despite Jarry’s recent form the Chilean should be able to find a way through Marozsan. Back Jarry to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, with three sets much likelier than two.
