THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Marin Cilic finished runner-up to Roger Federer here in 2018, just six months after doing so to the Swiss at Wimbledon, but he did claim a major title at the US Open in 2014. The 35-year-old suffered a serious injury at the Pune Open this time last season to miss almost the entirety of 2023, returning briefly for one match to soon at the Umag Open in July, but he looked decent in his fresh start last week in Brisbane, taking the first set from Jan-Lennard Struff before defeat. The Croat has drawn a really tough first round fixture here against the enigmatic Fabian Marozsan, who burst onto the scene last spring with a shock upset of then world number one Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters. 24-year-old Marozsan also reached the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters to prove himself a serious threat in big game situations and he overcame Gael Monfils in three tight sets this week in Auckland before defeat to top seed Ben Shelton.
Cilic is a huge unknown at this moment in time but it is unlikely that the seasoned veteran will be able to get back to his previous best. Back both players to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance or consider a one-off on this to end up a rather madcap five-setter.
