THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Fabian Marozsan brought a career-high ATP world ranking of 37th into the Madrid Open and he played like it on Wednesday, beating last season’s semi-finalist, Aslan Karatev, in two tiebreaks. The Hungarian made his name by stunning Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters almost a year ago but he has since enjoyed deep runs in Shanghai, Indian Wells and Miami to claim a huge amount of ranking points at Masters level.
World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo enjoyed a steady rise over the past two seasons but 2024 has not been his year so far, bringing a 9-12 record into Madrid after a three-set exit to Mariano Navone in the quarter-finals of the Bucharest Open last week. The 25-year-old won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open in 2022 but he has been far from convincing on the surface so far this season. Marozsan beat the Argentine in straight sets at the Australian Open in January and he can be backed to make the third round here.
TIP: FABIAN MAROZSAN TO WIN
