THE PREDICTION

World number 41 Alexei Popyrin brings some encouraging form into Indian Wells after a strong run to the semi-finals of the Qatar Open was ended in tight circumstances by eventual champion Karen Khachanov. The 24-year-old won his second ATP title at the Umag Open last summer to put a woeful 2022 behind him but there is certainly more for Popyrin to prove with a game that should thrive in these conditions, as a four-set exit to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open suggests. World number 58 Fabian Marozsan also lost to Khachanov in Doha to bring a two-match losing streak into his first appearance at Indian Wells. The Hungarian, also 24, enjoyed an eye-catching run to the third round in Melbourne before a four-set exit to Taylor Fritz and whilst recent results have not looked up to scratch he has proven to be a really tough draw at more prestigious events over the past 12 months. Slow hardcourt conditions should level the playing field a little in this first encounter but back in-form Popyrin to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
