There is more than a little spot of fate about this opening match for Emma Raducanu, who impressed on her return from three surgeries with a competitive defeat to Elina Svitolina in three sets at the Auckland Classic last week. The 21-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th after completing one of sport’s greatest stories when she won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier just months after making her WTA tour debut, beating Shelby Rogers in straight sets en-route. Raducanu did not drop a set during her miracle run in New York, displaying a refreshing brand of intelligent, ruthless tennis that dismantles her opponents’ games, but she has suffered an inordinate amount of injuries and setbacks since to come into the Australian Open ranked world number 299.
THE PREDICTION
In fact, both Raducanu and 31-year-old Rogers come into Melbourne on protected rankings as this is the American’s first match back on tour since suffering injury at Wimbledon last summer. Rogers set a career-high WTA world ranking of 30th in August 2022 but she has always had a higher, if fleeting, ceiling than that – notably becoming the last player to beat the now retired Ash Barty in the round prior to facing Raducanu in New York two years ago.
