THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Emma Navarro brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 31st into the Auckland Classic after an excellent end to last season and she looks a creditable dark horse for the final after conceding just three games against Elina Avanesyan on Wednesday. The American burst into form on the late hardcourt swing, stunning Maria Sakkari en-route to the semi-finals of the San Diego Open before a bug run to the last 16 at the Guadalajara Masters, and she put extra work in off the tour deep into November with the aim to hut the ground running here.

World number 41 Petra Martic beat Navarro in three sets at the Cincinnati Masters last August but she should find an even tougher version of the youngster here. Martic eased past Yue Yuan on Wednesday to build on a comeback over Rebeka Masarova in the first round but take Navarro to earn at least a set here as the slightest of favourites on recent form.

TIP: EMMA NAVARRO TO WIN A SET
