World number 68 Yafan Wang beat fourth seed Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets on Monday to set out her stall as a dark horse for the title here in Austin. The 29-year-old impressed in a brilliant run to the third round of the Australian Open last month, upsetting both Sorana Cirstea and Emma Raducanu in three sets before as tight a defeat to eventual runner-up Qinwen Zheng. World number 121 Emiliana Arango claimed her first tour-level win since October with a commanding straight-setter over Alycia Parks and it will be interesting to see what she can do over the coming weeks in these conditions after an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Masters last summer. Wang beat Arango in three tight sets in their only previous encounter at the Bogota Open three years ago but both players have improved significantly since. Back Wang to edge this second meeting too.
