THE PREDICTION

This could be a very significant week in former number 21 Amanda Anisimova’s comeback, with the high-altitude clay in Madrid a real sweet spot for her talents. The 22-year-old took a hiatus from the sport last season, following a loss in the first round here, after struggling with form and her health on tour but she has impressed in patches since returning at the start of 2024 – particularly in reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open. Anisimova set her career-best Grand Slam showing at Roland-Garros in 2019, losing in the semi-finals in three sets to eventual champion Ash Barty, and she made the quarter-finals here in 2022 to prove her credentials in these conditions.

World number 121 Emiliana Arango is better than her current deflated ranking suggests and she is well capable of causing an upset here with some momentum from qualifying. However, Anisimova came close to ousting Jessica Pegula at the Charleston Open last time out and she should have enough to come through this first encounter.

TIP: AMANDA ANISIMOVA TO WIN
