World number two Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam title here at the Australian Open this time last season, coming back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina. The 25-year-old has reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last five Grand Slam appearances, including a second final at the US Open last September in which she lost to Coco Gauff from a set up. Sabalenka achieved another career milestone last season in briefly becoming world number one after New York but Iga Swiatek swiftly returned to the top to keep their rivalry very much alive in 2024.
THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Ella Seidel qualified well this week to make her WTA tour and Grand Slam debut all at once. The German will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 172nd for her efforts but she has drawn perhaps the shorte3st straw in the draw as Sabalenka looks to make a statement following her surprise defeat to Rybakina at the Brisbane International last week. Back the defending champion to win a match that sees fewer than 16.5 games.
