THE PREDICTION

Top seed Elise Mertens faces second seed Emma Navarro in an intriguing first encounter between the two, with this 22-year-old Navarro’s first WTA final. The American will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 29th, Mertens’ current rank, after building on last week’s semi-final exit to Coco Gauff in Auckland with an excellent campaign here in Hobart and she will be seeded on her Australian Open debut next week as a result. 28-year-old Mertens dropped her first set of a solid run to the final in an entertaining clash with a resurgent Daria Saville on Friday, reaching her second final in three tournaments after finishing last season off with victory at the Jasmin Open. The Belgian has an excellent record in finals, winning eight of her 12 played so far, but the rampaging rise of Navarro makes this a really tough call. Taking uber-consistent Mertens to win at least a set feels like the sensible, if slightly cautious, way to avoid a result here but it would not be a surprise to see Navarro rise to the challenge.
